Phonics Games – The Reception Games Pack includes 7 board games (in total) and can be used to support a child’s reading development whilst they are in Reception. The games complement the HSC Reception Reading Pack beautifully and the board games correspond to Letters and Sounds Phases 2, 3 and 4. The skills your child will consolidate at home using these games remain relevant even if your child’s school follows an alternative phonics scheme.
Play the games to help your child learn through having fun – your child will practise reading CVC words, blending, segmentation and decoding. The games will also help your child consolidate ‘the sounds’, syllables and high frequency words.
Although ideally the games pack will work best as a complement to the Reception Reading pack, some parents may wish to purchase this pack in isolation – as a light touch way to enhance their children’s reading/phonic skills at home.
The ‘Home School Connect Parent Information Booklet’ that accompanies this pack will be particularly relevant for such parents. It contains useful information about how the games relate to what it is being taught in school. There are also other suggested ways to play the games (related to the Reception reading curriculum) so that families can get more out of the resources.
